Rules and sources
- Iceland is outside the EU customs union: the EU countervailing duty on Chinese BEVs does not apply; under the China–Iceland FTA Chinese-origin cars are duty-free (certificate of origin required). VAT 24% (on landed value + excise) ↗ official 2026-09-20
- Vehicle excise (vörugjald, Act 29/1993 art. 3, from 2026-01-01): 0.34% per gram of WLTP CO₂ above 15 g/km, maximum 70%; cars powered only by electricity, hydrogen or methane are exempt ↗ official 2026-09-20
- From 2026-01-01 all passenger cars pay a road charge of ISK 6.95 per km (a running cost, not charged at import) ↗ official 2026-09-20
- As an EEA member Iceland requires EU type approval; Chinese-spec cars without a COC need single-vehicle approval by Samgöngustofa before registration ↗ official 2026-09-20
Outside the EU customs union, so the EU's 17–35% countervailing duty on Chinese EVs does not apply; Chinese-origin cars are duty-free. Excise follows CO₂: BEVs exempt, PHEV / range-extender default to 40 g/km (about 8.5%), petrol defaults to 150 g/km (about 46%, maximum 70%); VAT 24%. For a BEV, Iceland is one of the lowest-taxed destinations in Europe; petrol cars rarely make sense. Sea freight usually transships via Rotterdam, so it is on the high side.
