- • A China-spec car without an EU CoC needs individual approval and a technical inspection before registration
- • EU duty is 10%; new China-built BEVs and range-extender cars also carry the EU countervailing duty, used cars (registered over 6 months and over 6,000 km) do not
- • NoVA is based on WLTP CO2 and zero-emission cars are exempt; third-country used cars pay in full on the net fair value under the law at the registration date, without intra-EU depreciation
Reglas y fuentes
- EU common duty on third-country passenger cars is 10%; import VAT at the national rate ↗ oficial 2026-10-03
- National standard VAT rates (AT 20 / GR 24 / HU 27 / HR 25 / SI 22 / MT 18) ↗ oficial 2026-10-03
- Countervailing duty on new China-built BEVs / range-extenders (Reg. (EU) 2024/2754 art. 1): manufacturer rate only with a listed maker's invoice declaration, otherwise 35.3%; used cars (C/2025/330: registered over 6 months and over 6,000 km) outside ↗ oficial 2026-10-02
- Registration in the EU requires a certificate of conformity or individual approval plus a roadworthiness check ↗ oficial 2026-10-03
- BMF: third-country car import duty 10%, import VAT 20% (base includes duty and costs to destination); NoVA is paid separately before registration ↗ oficial 2026-10-03
- BMF: from 1 July 2025 the M1 NoVA rate is round((WLTP−91)/5)% capped at 80%, plus EUR 80 per g above 155 g/km, less EUR 350 ↗ oficial 2026-10-03
- BMF: zero-emission (0 g/km) electric / hydrogen cars are NoVA-exempt ↗ oficial 2026-10-03
- BMF: third-country imports pay NoVA under the law at registration on the fair value excluding VAT; a lower value needs evidence ↗ oficial 2026-10-03
- oesterreich.gv.at: without EU type approval an individual / exceptional approval is needed; approved vehicles still need a database entry, fee capped at EUR 180 ↗ oficial 2026-10-03
EU duty 10% + VAT 20%, plus the NoVA registration tax: BEVs pay 0; a 1.5T petrol car (WLTP 130–150 g/km) pays round((CO2−91)/5)% of the net value less EUR 350, roughly 6–10% of the net price (EUR 1,250–2,050), with EUR 80 per gram above 155 g/km. New China-built BEVs and range-extender cars carry the EU countervailing duty: 35.3% unless a listed manufacturer issues the invoice with the required declaration; used cars (registered over 6 months and driven over 6,000 km) are outside it. Austria is landlocked: cars arrive via Koper or Trieste and continue by road. China-spec cars without an EU CoC need single-vehicle approval (cost estimated).
