Importing a car from China to Croatia / EU: full landed-cost guide 2026

Who can import and what gets in
- • Who can import: Individuals and companies can import; companies need an EORI number
- • A China-spec car without an EU CoC needs individual approval and a technical inspection before registration
- • EU duty is 10%; new China-built BEVs and range-extender cars also carry the EU countervailing duty, used cars (registered over 6 months and over 6,000 km) do not
- • PPMV is based on the Croatian retail price plus CO2 and does not apply to BEVs / zero-CO2 cars; it is declared to customs within 15 days of import

EU duty 10% + VAT 25%, plus the PPMV special tax: BEVs pay 0; petrol cars pay a Croatian retail-price band plus a CO2 band, about EUR 461–1,149 for a 1.5T at EUR 25,000–30,000 / WLTP 140–150; there is also an end-of-life vehicle fee of EUR 0.08/kg (about EUR 144 at 1,800 kg, BEVs included). New China-built BEVs and range-extender cars carry the EU countervailing duty: 35.3% unless a listed manufacturer issues the invoice with the required declaration; used cars (registered over 6 months and driven over 6,000 km) are outside it. Sea freight to Rijeka. China-spec cars without an EU CoC need single-vehicle approval (DZM approval plus a CVH/HAK check; cost estimated).
