Importing a car from China to Chile: full landed-cost guide 2026
Duties, VAT, who can import, what gets in, shipping — and the DDP price of 28 popular Chinese models in Chile, computed by our rules engine with sources and verification dates.
Who can import and what gets in
- • Used cars may only be imported from the US / Canada (USMCA); Chinese used cars cannot enter — new cars can
- • Who can import: Mostly companies: RUT tax ID and a licensed customs broker required; individuals may import a new car for own use through a broker; the 0% FTA rate needs a Form F certificate of origin
- • Used cars cannot be imported (Law 18.483 art. 21); the only exceptions are Chileans returning after 18+ months abroad, residents of the Iquique / Punta Arenas free zones and diplomats
- • Under the Chile–China FTA China-built cars pay 0% duty (6% general rate without a Form F), 19% VAT and no import excise; the old luxury-car import tax (art. 46) was abolished from 2007
- • New cars need a 3CV homologation certificate or individual approval; left-hand drive
Tax rules and sources
- Chilean Customs: art. 21 of Law 18.483 prohibits importing used vehicles (cars, motorcycles, trucks) from abroad or from free zones, with statutory exceptions only ↗ official 2026-10-04
- Chile import taxes: 6% general duty on CIF + 19% VAT on CIF + duty; over 97% of tariff lines are duty-free under the Chile–China FTA with a Form F certificate of origin, otherwise the benefit is lost ↗ verified 2026-10-04

- SII Circular 13/2004: Law 19.914 repealed art. 46 of the VAT law (85% luxury tax on the customs value of imported cars above about US$15,834), phased down 2004–2006 and zero from 2007 ↗ official 2026-10-04
Used cars cannot be imported (exceptions for returning Chileans, free-zone residents and diplomats). China-built cars pay 0% duty with a Form F certificate of origin (6% without), 19% VAT on CIF + duty and no import excise; first registration carries a green tax by fuel economy / NOx (zero for BEVs) and there is an annual 2% luxury tax on cars worth more than about 62 UTA. New cars need 3CV homologation or individual approval; left-hand drive; via San Antonio / Valparaíso.
