Who can import and what gets in

Tax rules and sources
- EU duty 10% + IVA 22% (on price + freight/insurance + duty + countervailing duty) ↗ official 2026-09-20
- Countervailing duty on new Chinese-built BEVs by maker: BYD 17.0 / Geely 18.8 / SAIC 35.3 / Tesla 7.8 / others 20.7 (Reg. (EU) 2024/2754; new cars only: <6 months or <6,000 km) ↗ official 2026-09-20
- IPT provincial registration tax: €150.81 up to 53 kW, then €3.5119 per extra kW; provinces may add up to 30% and almost all charge the maximum (€196.05 up to 53 kW) ↗ official 2026-09-20
- Ecotassa (surcharge on new cars above 160 g/km CO₂) applied only to cars bought and registered between 2019-03-01 and 2021-12-31; it is no longer charged and is not included here ↗ official 2026-09-20
- Chinese-spec cars without an EU type approval (COC) need single-vehicle approval at the Motorizzazione (collaudo in unico esemplare) ↗ official 2026-09-20
EU duty 10% + IVA 22%; on registration you pay the provincial IPT by engine power (most provinces add the full 30%); the Ecotassa CO₂ surcharge was abolished in 2022; Chinese-spec cars need single-vehicle approval; new Chinese-built BEVs get the maker's countervailing duty automatically (BYD 17 / Geely 18.8 / SAIC 35.3 / Tesla 7.8 / others 20.7), used cars exempt.
